As many parents can relate, he was unsure how to respond to her intense personal crisis. Should he scold her? Laugh it off? Show compassion? Or perhaps throw a fit of his own?
In an unusually calm and clear moment, he simply said, "Baby, I know there's happiness in you somewhere. You need to figure out how to Free the Happy."
Whether or not his words had an immediate impact on her, they resonated with me. I loved the phrase, and it quickly became a family catchphrase.
